"The Hunger Games" Book Review

I really enjoyed this book! It is as good as the excitement surrounding it has led me to expect it to be. I really wish I had the other two books; this was such a fast and amazing book and i can't wait to read the others. I was hoping to have it finished by the time the movie premiered, but I shouldn't have worried. I can't wait until i get the next book and see the movie! "May the odds be ever in your favor."

Insane Book Art!!!

I don't know if anyone has noticed yet, but I'm kind of a bookish person. I feel they are a better medium than most people realize. There are many things you can do with a computer, but a book has personality!

You sit there reading from a computer no matter how shiny and high-tech and people assume you're addicted to video games, have the personality of a kumquat, or on the other end of the scale, assume you're trying too hard to look high-tech and in the in-crowd. Whereas with a book people assume you're intelligent, sophisticated and possibly weird. But on the other hand they could also assume you're too poor for a high-tech gadget, which would be wrong because books are sometimes pretty expensive.

You also get bothered by people wondering if you could settle a dispute by telling the exact and correct spelling of a certain word. And, of course, it's a word you have never used before and therefore you don't know how to spell it. The computer would be helpful in that exact situation, because then you could look up the Oxford English Dictionary and then you would say, "You're both wrong, it's Latin. Why don't you idiots get a Kindle like a real person!"

But anyway, I wanted to show this amazing artwork by Brian Dettmer! Using "knives, tweezers and surgical tools" he creates sculptural beauties out of old and out-dated resource books. Check it out:


If I had even a tenth of the patience needed to carve out these wonderful pieces.....

The "Modern Painters" one is my favorite! It's just beautiful!

Cthulhu Book Cover

I haven't mentioned design in a while, even though it's my calling, and now I have finally found a reason to mention it at all!

This book cover may be one of the best I have seen in a long time!!!!!

It's just perfect!

It has the right amount of color - although some people might argue that gray isn't the best of colors - but this looks truly great!

It's symbolic of the vileness of London smog and the monster itself!

It is charming and elegant!

It's suitable for people into science fiction, steampunk, or anyone going through the "Classics" section because it will catch their eye! It definitely caught mine!

I really want to read this book now! But only if it wears this cover and if I can have it because I'm selfish!

My House Was on Fire Last Night

I had just gotten home from work. There was a rather small, but nonetheless, bad fire going on in the walls of my parent's house. The smoke kept building and the walls began to crackle and we had to call for help.

After the firefighters and policemen came, they settled their generators and hoses and an assortment of other weaponry to make battle against the vicious flames that threatened to eat our old, mostly wooden home.

It was a bit traumatic to watch while I tried to get my dog to relax in the backyard, as smoke billowed through the chimney flue that we didn't realize had an opening inside the house (I mean, it obviously did, but it had been sealed off so we couldn't use it - apparently not very well sealed off). Smoke even leaked through the pipes and roof. I was so afraid that we would loose everything. I couldn't help the tears that coursed down my face for a few minutes.

They were there for a while, approximately two hours or so. It was so cold outside and it even started to rain at some point. They were very conscientious and apologized for any damage done to the house. But it needed to be done. It was either loose the whole house or have a few holes in the wall.

I wrote this blog entry to thank the brave and wonderful firefighters who saved my family's home, many of which are volunteers. I wish to thank the men and women who showed up from the Womelsdorf, Newmanstown and Marion Township fire departments. Thank you so much! You are a blessing!
