Although I do not at first look like I would enjoy anything that is distilled down into a simple picture, I actually do love minimalist work!

After being forced to do it for a class project - IT'S REALLY HARD! - I have the utmost admiration for those who can do it and do it well!

This artist, Christian Jackson (who you can find here), decided to do a few posters of beloved children's book classics.

Sneak Peek 1 of My Latest Project!

Here's a tantalizing sneak peek of my latest project! What, oh what could it be?

I'm A Basket Case for Lauren DeStefano!!!

Hey all! I'm not really a basket case (or am I?), but I am really excited about a contest that the author of the Chemical Garden Trilogy, Lauren DeStefano, is having! It involves designing something so I am in!

She wants a banner for her new Facebook fanpage that is changing over into the timeline look and she doesn't know what she wants so she's turned to her legion of fans for help.

Now you know why I titled my blog entry the way I did.

Here are my two banners. I've already sent them in to her, so no copying (she's very strict about people using other people's artwork for this, as she should be). 

This one uses the original artist's photograph for the cover of "Wither", so I'm not sure if it's an actual contender. The photographer is Ali Smith with the original cover design created by Lizzy Bromley. Still, I think it's lovely, obviously you know what it represents, and the quote is very dramatic - "Love is not enough to keep us alive." This is why I love DeStefano's work!

I have higher hopes for my second entry!

This one is based upon the second book in the trilogy, "Fever". The quote is from the pages of the book itself: "Everyone should remember being born. It doesn't seem fair that we only remember dying." It's similar to my first design albeit with a different color scheme and obviously steals a bit of Bromley's cover ideas. I found this picture using Google and I couldn't find a person claiming direct ownership of the photo, so I re-colored it in Photoshop and used it for this design. If someone does own this picture and doesn't want me using it, please let me know ASAP so I can design a different entry before the contest is over (March 31st at 12:00 am).

I like how it's obvious that the pretty bird has escaped the cage, but there is still one feather left behind as if she hasn't really got away as cleverly as she thinks she has.

Anyway, wish me luck! The prize isn't money but it's still pretty awesome nonetheless - autographed books, bookmark, a copy of an originally unpublished short story, and a sneak peek at the third novel!!!

Go ahead, throw in your own entry. But honestly, you haven't a chance against these two! lol jk :/

"Plastic Culture" Book Review

Plastic Culture: How Japanese Toys Conquered the World by Woodrow Phoenix
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A very charming work about plastic toys from Japanese artists and how they have been influenced by America's 1950s and 1960s memorabilia. The book itself is a short read, but holds many fascinating pictures of toys and figures from artists I had never heard of before but have huge followings due to their unique styling. I recommend this book to those who like toys, the history of toys, the social impact of toys on children and adults, or are making toys. I could also recommend this to designers, interior decorators, illustrators, and those interested in branding design, because there are many tips and ideas about the simplicity and complexity of the toys and their designs that I think would be helpful to many people. Overall, I found this book entertaining and interesting.

Cthulhu Book Cover

I haven't mentioned design in a while, even though it's my calling, and now I have finally found a reason to mention it at all!

This book cover may be one of the best I have seen in a long time!!!!!

It's just perfect!

It has the right amount of color - although some people might argue that gray isn't the best of colors - but this looks truly great!

It's symbolic of the vileness of London smog and the monster itself!

It is charming and elegant!

It's suitable for people into science fiction, steampunk, or anyone going through the "Classics" section because it will catch their eye! It definitely caught mine!

I really want to read this book now! But only if it wears this cover and if I can have it because I'm selfish!

New Products on My Etsy and Zibbet!!!!

Hello all!

I have added some wonderful new products to my Etsy and Zibbet accounts!

The first wonderful batch of product is a batch of things I like to call "Glitter Art" (with all the fancy arm waving and finger twirling that the French do - "It is art!"). These art pieces are portraiture of the great cultural icons of our day: Twilight's Jacob, Disney Princesses' Ariel and Cinderella, Harry Potter himself and his suedo-nemesis Draco Malfoy (he's so divine!) and many more to come!

I added another pretty in pink mini address book, for those who want to carry a little cute book in their uber-stylish purse!

I also made what I like to call a treasure box! It's a beauty! All purple and glittery gold!

I have also changed the names of my line of Sketchbooks and blank Journals to say Pillowbooks. I changed the names to add that flair, elegance and sexiness to my products. A pillowbook is a diary, or a book of musings, that is kept under your pillow for safe-keeping. Isn't that just luscious?!
